Out today on DVD from Park Circus is Patrice Leconte's (Ridicule, The Hairdresser's Husband) 2000 film, La Veuve de Saint-Pierre (The Widow of Saint-Pierre), starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil.
The film takes place on a small French island near Canada in 1850, where Neel Auguste (Emir Kusturica) is convicted of drunkenly murdering a man and sentenced to die by guillotine.
While Neel awaits his fate in prison under the care of the Captain (Auteuil), he is befriended by the latter's wife, Pauline (Binoche), and becomes welcomed by other islanders who he helps along the way.
Based on a true story, La Veuve de Saint-Pierre won multiple awards on its initial release, including the Audience Award for Best Film at the 2000 Toronto Film Festival.
