They Won't Believe Me
Larry Ballantine is a lying, cheating, adulterer--on trial for the murder of his wife--and innocent. But as he tells his story to the jury, he has the terrible realization that They Won't Believe Me.Ballantine (Robert Young) married Gretta (Rita Johnson) for her money and has had a series of affairs throughout their marriage. He finally decides to leave with his current girlfriend, Verna (Academy Award winner Susan Hayward). But Verna dies in an automobile accident; her body is burned beyond recognition--and the police report the body as Gretta's. Seeing his chance to keep the money and have his freedom, Ballantine goes home to murder his wife and hide the body but discovers Gretta has committed suicide. When the police discover Gretta's body, they assume however that it belongs to Verna and arrest Ballantine for a murder he planned but did not commit in this film noir thriller.
