Patrick (IAN SHAW) and Dominic (RUAIDHRI CONROY) are a pair of brothers enjoying their independent existence living in a beautiful if decaying old country house in West Cork. Largely left to their own devices since the death of their father, the boys eccentric mother (MARIANNE FAITHFULL) spends much of her time travelling abroad, occasionally returning to pay the bills. The boys share an idealistic lifestyle, generally unaware of and uninterested in the larger world beyond.

All this begins to change with the arrival of Anya (JULIA BRENDLER), a strong-willed 17 year-old German girl. At first she simply becomes a friend to the two boys, but as the brothers each develop a romantic attachment to Anya their lives become filled with confusion and turmoil. Gradually, Patrick and Anya are drawn to each other as they fall in love, a situation Dominic cannot readily accept. And so the brothers previously-solid relationship begins to come under increasing pressure as Dominic experiences the doubts and pain of impossible first love.
