From the archive: The Exorcist

With Halloween looming, we're getting into the mood to scare ourselves with the spookiest of big screen horror. After delving into our archives once more, we've uncovered a number of behind-the-scenes images from William Friedkin's feted and controversial 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist.

When an innocent young girl is possessed by a demon, a priest struggling with his faith is asked by her mother, to perform the ancient rite of exorcism.

Belief in evil. Belief that evil can be cast out. From these two strands of faith, author William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin wove The Exorcist, the frightening and realistic story of an innocent girl inhabited by a malevolent entity. This is the terrifying tale of her mother's frantic resolve to save her and two priests - one doubt-ridden, the other a rock of faith - joined in battling ultimate evil.

Winner of 1973 OscarsĀ® for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing, The Exorcist remains one of the most shocking and gripping movies in the history of cinema and is a regular feature on lists of the scariest movies ever made. We hope you enjoy these very special behind the scenes images, courtesy of our friends at Warner Bros. Pictures.
